„The Big Lebowski” has grown up again

One who watched the news from the film festival in Karlovy Vary, could have easily gotten an impression that nothing interesting happened except Renée Zellweger lost her suitcase. Few celebrities visited the event with its tight budget, and their importance did not exceed the standard level. This time, they were the least interesting things for the film fans at the festival.

Certain measure of anarchy

Michael Lee, a reporter for the independent film magazine IndieWire, nine years ago came up with a title that suits the just-ended show – “The Big Lebowski among the European festivals.” The Karlovy Vary event was for Lee “magnificent, ambitious, stylish and full of ideas, but also meaningless, confused, unorganized and stretching further than it could reach," just as was the famous relaxed hero in the movie about brothers Coen.

A lot has changed since then. Unreliable, though often very comic, interpreters replaced relatively unmistakable subtitle makers. Queues in front of the cashiers were definitely shorter than nine years ago, thanks to the well-functioning computer system.

However, some of the anarchical ethos, which is so distant from the atmosphere at any other festival, remains. All social groups live happily next to each other. Local homeless people find asylum in armchairs in the first floor of Thermal Hotel, some tens of meters…
